Republic of Italy
The Italian flag was modelled on that of revolutionary France (blue-white-red) at the end of the 18th Century, with green substituted for blue. Italy at that time was not a united country and vatrious variants were used in different regions. The tricolour was officially adopted for the Kingdom of Sardinia with the arms of Savoy in its centre, the basis of the flag of a united Italy. The arms was removed in 1946 when Italy became a republic.
