The far east of East Timor

The easternmost village of East Timor is Tutuala. It is situated above a cliff with great views of the coastline and the Indonesian island of Kisar. A Portuguese "Pousada" or guesthouse is here, where it is now again possible to stay. From the village, a rough road, passing small villages, leads 8 km to the beach, known as Pantai Walu (or Valou) with just offshore Jaco Island, the easternmost point of the island of Timor.

Just west of Tutuala, there are various examples of traditional houses, featuring traditional roof decoration with shells and antlers, of the Fataluku people, who live in this region, around the village of Mehara; this was a place of refuge for independence leader, Xanana Gusmão, the first President of East Timor.
