Around Haiti
Haiti is a beautiful and spectacular country as can be seen from the air; the name "Haïti" is derived from "Ayiti", meaning "Land of high mountains", the original Taíno Arawak Indian name for the mountainous western side of the island. Especially along the border with the Dominican Republic is some spectacular scenery, like the dramatic Étang Saumâtre (or Lake Azuei), Haiti's largest lake, near the border with the Dominican Republic. There are also good views along the roads in the north of the country, with great views near Milot, south of Cap-Haïtien, where the liberated slaves who had declared their independence had built, between 1805 and 1820, Citadelle Laferrière (Citadelle Henri Christophe), a large mountaintop fortress to keep the newly-independent nation of Haiti safe from the French.
On the west coast, north of Port-au-Prince, is the port town of Saint-Marc (or Sen Mak in Haitian Creole); it is in the Artibonite Department, and east of it is the friendly village of Petite Rivière de l'Artibonite along the river with the same name. And on the south coast is the picturesque town of Jacmel, along its beautiful bay, the Baie de Jacmel.
