People of Haiti

About 95 percent of the people of Haiti are of predominately African origin. The remaining 5 percent are mostly of mixed-race background (mulatto) and other races. Life can be quite hard; the country is the poorest in the hemisphere and people need to be resourceful; more than two-thirds of the labour force do not have formal jobs but there are many people that make ends meet by small-scale farming, selling on the street and in the tourist spots perform music and dance for tips. But all over the country people are very friendly and hospitable, welcoming visitors to their beautiful country.
