View to Ramieux, the castle of Madame Christophe, from the Citadelle Laferrière (Citadelle Henri Christophe), a large mountaintop fortress 8 km uphill from the town of Milot. Built between 1805 and 1820, it was part of a system of fortifications designed to keep the newly-independent nation of Haiti safe from the French. Note the piles of cannon balls.
