Jumeirah, along the coast to the west of the old city of Dubai, is where the incredible construction has taken place over the past years. A great view of the area can be had from the top of Burj al-Arab, the iconic sail-shaped hotel on the beach. Just below it is Wild Wadi Water Park, an outdoor water park with a wave pool, multiple water slides and two artificial surfing machines. The tallest and fastest free-fall water slide outside of North America, Jumeirah Sceirah, rises to 33 metres and has riders hurtling down at up to 80 km/hour. Nearby is the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, whose patrons have unlimited access to the park.
Ibn Battuta Mall is the world's largest themed shopping mall, designed to celebrate the travels of the famous 14th Century Arab explorer Ibn Battuta. The various "courts" in the Mall represent the countries he visited. There are over 275 retailers, 50 restaurants and food outlets and 21 cinema screens including the UAE's only IMAX theatre. And then there is the huge Mall of the Emirates, a shopping mall in the Al Barsha district, with 223,000 m² of shops, a fourteen-screen movie theater, a gaming arena, and, most famously, Ski Dubai, the Middle East's first indoor ski slope. Its ski area is one of the largest in the world: an 85 m high indoor mountain with 5 slopes of varying steepness and difficulty, including a 400 m long run and a 90 m long quarter pipe for snowboarders. A quad lift and a tow lift carry skiers and snowboarders up the mountain. There is also a 3000 m² Snow Park play area, sled and toboggan runs, an ice cave and a 3D theatre. It was officially inaugurated in late November 2005.
